Want An Eco-Friendly Roof?

Thinking of having a more eco-friendly roof? Why not a green roof? I have a couple easy ways to start. First, the color. Does it need to be black? If not, then a lighter color can create a ‘cool roof’, literally. This will not only reflect the sun’s rays away from the house, but also help with the interior temperature. There are white asphalt shingles available at similar prices to darker shingles. 

Secondly, explore a metal roof. They are durable, long-lasting and light reflective. You can even amp up the eco-friendliness with a recycled metal content and a lighter color. The downside is that metal roofs are generally more expensive than asphalt shingle and with Midwest winters, you need to keep in mind where ALL the snow will go after it slides off the roof.

To summarize, it’s best to keep these thoughts in mind when trying to be more eco-friendly, no matter what direction you decide to go.  Stick to lighter colors, explore sheet metal roofs to keep things cooler and more reflective as well. In the end, you want an efficient but attractive house. With the trend of today’s roofing material, you should be able to do just that.
